Welcome to the show that never ends.

According to reports from sources inside the regime, Donald Trump lately has been down in the dumps and angry at almost everyone. He has good reason to be. The war against Iran — the one Bibi Netanyahu talked him into — has turned into an unmitigated disaster. His poll numbers are dropping like a rock down a well. He’s losing in federal courts throughout the land (except for the reliably corrupt SCOTUS, of course). His attempts to rig the midterm elections are going nowhere. They made him take his name off the Kennedy Center. And to top it off, everybody’s laughing at his botched “renovation” of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
So, two weeks ago he held a (poorly attended) campaign-style, emotional support rally on the National Mall. Because nothing bucks up Donnie and soothes his anxieties like an adoring crowd of worshippers cheering and applauding, stroking his massive ego and validating his undoubted awesomeness. But, you may ask, what do the rally goers receive in return? Certainly not uplifting inspiration from his incoherent speechifying. Nor even a speck of any useful information. No, what they get is 80-90 minutes of entertainment MAGA style.
Trump’s act varies little from performance to performance. There’s the transgender weightlifter bit (pictured above). The bit about how wind turbines (or windmills, if you prefer) cause cancer and kill whales. The “stolen” 2020 election bit. The ballroom bit. The mail-in voting bit.
But Trump’s routine also includes boasts about his imaginary victories and accomplishments. Grievances in which he invites the audience to share. Ridiculous, made-up “sir” stories. Rude insults and juvenile nicknames directed against imagined enemies (Dumocrats — that’s comedy gold right there). And, of course, endless and obvious lies for his cultists to delight in. As a bonus, he invariably treats the crowd to a demonstration of his patented version of what he thinks is dancing.
Naturally, the MAGA faithful have seen and heard all this before — over and over again. But that’s the whole point. If you went to a Rolling Stones concert, wouldn’t you go away disappointed if you didn’t hear “Satisfaction” for the 900th time?
Like the Roman emperors of old, Trump provides circuses in order to distract the masses from his incompetence and criminality. A UFC cage match on the White House lawn! A Great American State Fair on the National Mall! (USA Today called it “a fabulous flop.”) A planned NASCAR race around Washington, DC! Plus, Fourth of July speeches starring the one and only Him! In short, America now officially has a show biz president.
